Couple of weeks back, I blogged about a Melbourne Shuffle competition by Kentucky Fried Chicken where the winner gets a free trip to Melbourne. The winner has just been announced.

I am speechless. If you compare the winner with the guys @ Melbourne in the video below, you'll understand why..

    Shuffle Crew

    December 2, 2008

    xes

Couple of years back, we didn't foresee a thing called shuffle crew to pop out in the Melbourne Shuffle scene. It has now become a norm in Australia and Malaysia and even Russia and a place called Lithuania.

And in Lithuania, I didn't foresee that a shuffle crew uses the word "XES" as their shuffle crew name!

    Check out their video!

What are the chances, a website that got famous through Melbourne Shuffle videos and a shuffle crew using the name XES. I got in touch with one of their members and asked whether they are in any way connected to this website.

And the answer I got was along the lines of..

    "Never heard of you". -_-

I am quite surprised that I haven't seen the Melbourne Shuffle in any of the So You Think You Can Dance shows. I wonder what will the Judges say when they see people doing the shuffle on stage. They'll probably say "Stop dancing like a monkey!".

Now, some chaps in Australia has came up with something 'brilliant'. They have organised an online shuffle video competition called, "So You Think You Can Shuffle". O_o. Winner gets two return flight to a Shuffle meet in Asia with 3 nights accommodation. I wonder where in Asia..I have a feeling its Malaysia.

More information and details go to http://www.australianshuffler.com/

    Yet another WTF moment.

    Hot FM Hot Shuffle

    November 18, 2008

    xes

I thought my eyes were playing with my mind when I saw some chaps in a KFC television commercial shuffling after eating something called Hot Rod. The dance resembles the Melbourne Shuffle and after catching the commercial second time, I can't believe it. Kentucky Fried Chicken is endorsing the Melbourne Shuffle!!!

    Check out their latest advertisement!!

THIS IS A REAL WTF MOMENT...

But the chap in office attire is actually Frankson, one of my old raving kakis! Looks like his acting career which started from a U-Mobile commercial has move up a notch!!

And this is not the only thing that amazes me...there's even a competition which awards the winner a trip to Melbourne, Australiaaa!! ZomGGG

    To enter:

    - Starting from 10 November, chase some stupid Hot FM Viva Zoomerz at their location
    - Show them your lousy skills
    - Strut your stuff and they will record you
    - From 8 - 12 December, a panel of judges and listeners will determine the luck of the winner through a vote
    - Best shuffler gets to qualify to the semi finals. 20 finalists will qualify for the finals
    - Overall winner will win a trip to Melbourne worth RM8,000.

Rakan Muda is a youth movement under the purview of the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports. Since its inception, it has been actively promoting various sports to the youth. When I was in primary school, I signed up for it but never got an answer from them. Many years later, I found out that they sent me a letter confirming my membership but the letter was kept by my Mum without showing it to me. -_-

Melbourne Shuffle on the other hand is a dance which originates from the clubs Melbourne. During its early years, it's a dance associates with all night long clubbing and drugs. Clubbers will pop couple of 'Speed' so that they can shuffle all night long. When it first started in Malaysia, it's a dance heavily associated with clubbing and drugs. It doesn't even have a name - we just call it the Melbourne Underground. Further, google search at that time didn't even yield a single relevant result.

But this dance has evolved dramatically in Malaysia. It has gone mainstream with kids below the age of 15 shuffling to hardstyle music. For the older generation, Hardstyle music is something like fengtau.

And the link between Rakan Muda and Melbourne?

RAKAN MUDA GOT SHUFFLE COMPETITION HAHAHAHAHAHAHA WTF!!!

    Flyer

Recently, a Melbourne Shuffle competition was held at the launch of "Rakan Muda Siber". It was launched by the Prime Minister's wife.

    Dancing in the streets

    April 27, 2008

Source: The Star Online - Dancing in the streets

      By IAN YEE

BY ABOUT 5pm every Saturday, the open space outside Maybank at the Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail intersection in Kuala Lumpur becomes the venue for a huge outdoor party. Teenagers just turn up from everywhere, with music blaring from portable speakers hooked up to their MP3 players and cellphones.

They would slowly find members of their crew, and start to chat and catch up. But many of them have a different purpose for meeting up.

Hidden identities: This group of shufflers came ready with their masks last Saturday, which are worn during dance-offs with shufflers from other groups.

Johnson Lau, 18, has been taking the train there every Saturday from his home in Sentul. Five months ago, he discovered something there that has become a passion – shuffle dancing.

Shuffling is now more than just a hip dance move. It’s a movement. Almost every state in Malaysia now has a shuffling community, and the shufflers are hardcore. They participate in huge events and competitions, and some of them are sponsored by big brands like Hotlink and DiGi.

They take their moves seriously, working hard to elevate it to more than just a dance. It is now a legit street culture with a massive following among teenagers.

At Jalan Bukit Bintang, around five to 10 shuffle groups come each week to create their own dance floor by gathering together in a small circle. Cheering and jeering each other, they take turns showing off dance moves to music from their little portable speakers.

“I think it’s fun,” Johnson said about their weekly gatherings. “I love to shuffle because it helps me to relax, and every time I dance it seems like I have an escape from all my troubles.”

Showing support: These kids are wearing shirts bearing the logos of their shuffle group.

Fellow shuffler Mohammad Nazlee Abas, aka Katong, used to be a DJ and b-boy before he found shuffling. Now he's already a semi-pro, and a well-known name on the shuffle circuit. Katong is part of a group called the Underground Shuffle Squad, or USS; and claims it is sponsored by a big corporation to enter shuffle competitions.

But at these weekend gatherings, teams like USS and Johnson’s group, Hardstyle Republic, often challenge each other to what they call “full battles”, something like a dance-off. And apparently, they get pretty serious.

“We have a ritual, where the loser – the one who can’t match the other person’s moves, or runs out of ideas – has to give up the shirt he’s wearing (which usually bears the logo of the team), and the winner will have to burn it,” said Katong.

And they really do burn them. Right on the pavement, in probably the most crowded intersection in KL. Even more bizarre is the practice of wearing masks while going into dance battles.

“Sometimes we wear these masks to conceal our identities when we dance-off. That way only after the battle is over will we know which groups our opponent actually belonged to,” Katong, 20, said.

He added that the weekly gatherings at Bukit Bintang aren’t that big compared to the events and competitions they go to. Sometimes they meet at Taman Titiwangsa where hundreds of them come in their pimped out rides to shuffle, with music pumping from their car stereos.

The shufflers are not the only ones at the Bukit Bintang pavement. Hardcore metal heads and rockers also gather here on Saturday evenings, and they aren’t too impressed by what they see from the shufflers.

Join the party: The crowd, a mix of shufflers and rockers, in the Bukit Bintang area in Kuala Lumpur on Satuday.

It’s easy to tell the two groups apart. The shufflers have a more hip-hop style, with baggy T-shirts and pants with reflective strips that make their moves flashier. The rockers sport dark colours, have multiple piercing on their faces and have punk-ish hairstyles. To some of them, the shufflers seem like hip-hop posers, and they find their dance moves silly.

When asked about the rockers, Johnson simply said that he “doesn’t want to cause trouble”, so he and his group leave when the most hardcore of rockers and mat rempit guys come in later around 10pm.

Rocker Mohammad Alif Fitri, 23, known as Slay, however, prefers a more understanding approach to his shuffling peers.

“I don’t mind them, really. They should do whatever they want as long as they’re enjoying themselves. I think it’s better to just make friends,” said the well-mannered rocker.

Slay first started getting into rock/metal culture when he was 13, after being introduced to heavy metal music and other hardcore rock genres.

“At first it was just the music, but when I was in Form Three, I started to pick up the fashion too. Surprisingly, the teachers were alright with it! Even now my boss doesn’t mind, because I still do my job properly,” he said.

Nevertheless, Slay feels that some people still misunderstand and judge them based on their appearances. Even his parents found it hard to accept his clothes and piercings at first, but now they have slowly realised that rock is part of his “jiwa” (soul) and that there was no point dissuading him anymore.

According to Slay, all the rockers do every week is hang out and meet other people like them. And sometimes at “events” like concerts or gatherings, other rocker communities from other parts of the Klang Valley like Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya and Putrajaya will join in.

“Actually it’s just a social circle. We meet up to talk about the latest rock trends, dressing styles, discuss music, and just hang out. We don’t cause any trouble, so usually the security guards and police don’t chase us away or anything. It's just a hobby and fashion style,” he added.

But in spite of what they say, when such a large number of rowdy young kids gathers together in what is essentially a display of machismo, trouble is bound to flare up particularly between the shuffle groups who are there for some “friendly” competition.

Last Saturday, things started to simmer when one or two minor scuffles broke out. Some of the kids fled, sensing things were about to get ugly. Soon enough, just as it was getting dark, a mob of around 20 angry teenagers were seen dragging a guy into a back alley. The others on the street – the youths, tourists, security guards – just watched in silence.

And this was literally seconds after a security guard assured us that the rockers and shufflers almost never caused trouble.

The security personnel hired by the management of private buildings around the area have no jurisdiction to disperse this youth crowd, or to take action against them if they misbehave.

Or perhaps it's just more convenient for them to take that approach because handling the mob of over a hundred youngsters must be daunting.

“People think they don’t cause trouble, but that’s because they don’t want to be responsible. So they pretend nothing happens. But the truth is, these guys get into fights pretty often.

“Anyway, there’s a police booth right across the street,” said one of the guards there.

The police booth is only a few metres away with a clear view of the pavement.

“All we can do here is patrol the area,” said one of the three policemen who went to check out the scene. “We chase them away sometimes, but they always come back after a few minutes anyway.

“They fight all the time, almost every week. But we can’t do much about it. There’re so many of them, and so few of us. We can’t be watching them all the time,” he said.

After saying that, the policemen proceeded to clear the area, slowly walking around the pavement shooing the kids off. Within five minutes, not a single shuffler or rocker was to be seen.

All that was left was an empty pavement, with barely a trace of the huge celebration of teen culture and passion that was in full swing just minutes ago.

But they were still around, hanging out somewhere in the Golden Triangle just waiting for the right time to reappear and continue partying the night away.

    My 2 cents
What the crap is happening to the Melbourne Shuffle in Malaysia? Why are there clans for shuffling groups?? It's not Counter strike man!!!

Gone were the days when the Melbourne Shuffle was done exclusively by a small group of clubbers. I don't know whether it's because of the way Melbourne Shuffle was portrayed in the above article or it has really gone down the drain.

Ok, I better shaddap before I get beaten up on the streets.

After so many months of discussion and deliberation, it’s finally happened – the first shuffle competition in Miri, on the 15th and 17th of November. With the RM1000 prize money for the first place, contestants from all over Sarawak flew or even drove to Miri’s notorious club – Up2U, just for two nights of fighting it out on the dancefloor.

The competition on Wednesday (15th November) night was merely the elimination round, designed to select ten finalists out of the nineteen participants. Friday (17th November) night was a more serious affair, with several of the contestants exhausted to the point of being carried off the dance-floor halfway through their performances.

Such publicity! Such excitement! All that sweat – and maybe secretly shed tears, and the surprisingly good performances… and three winners were picked out of the nineteen contestants.

Alex Chua of Miri walked away the second runner-up, with his consistent performance and overwhelming popularity among the crowd. Wouldn’t say he was outstanding in any way, other than the fact he did well technically, so we’ll just move on to the next winner.

Philo, a reader of www.xes.cx engaged me to assist her in procuring the services of Melbourne Shufflers to perform for the World Cyber Games.

Initially it sounded easy as all I had to do is get few shufflers and thereafter dance on stage.

I was wrong. We had a huge problem before the event!

This time round, there were only 10 contestants left from the 17 contestants in the Semi Finals. Gurmit, Johnson and I judged this competition again.

We had the opportunity to be introduced to Freddy, the boss of Station 3. He treated us with some drinks though not as much as last week. Last week was crazy, the manager fed us with too much beer.

Since Swedish Daniel Norstom wanted to check out the scene in Melaka, we brought him along. I hope he had a great time there :D

Just right after work, Johnson and I rushed to Melaka to judge the semifinals of the Melbourne Shuffle Competition at Station 3, Melaka.

Many thanks to DJ Reeve for picking us up from Pure Bar, getting us a room at Fenix Inn and organizing the event.

Fenix Inn is one unique inn. It consist 3 adjoining shops. The ground floors of each shop consist of a cybercafe, the lobby and a BLOODY CAR PARK respectively. The car park can only fit about 6 cars though. We had to hand in our car keys so that the guards can park and repark the car.

    Left, the car park.

Station 3 used to be one of the most happening clubs in Melaka. But it’s been around for almost 6 years and as such, just like many other old clubs, their patronage lately has been dwindling. Therefore, they organized an event to attract the crowd back.

    Congratulation to:

    Azmer – 1st Prize! RM2000!
    Eddy – 2nd Prize RM1000.
    Christina! 3rd Prize RM500.

    The winners

The trophies + token for judges

Here’s a little insight of how the judging panel works.

The panel of judges changed every round. It was the decision of the organizers and also due to some unexpected events. That explains the inconsistent results.

I was pretty frustrated to see some good shufflers that didnt qualify (esp Johnson arghhh). But qualification was not decided by one man but a panel of judges. It's a question of perspective. One would feel this shuffler is better, but another one would feel that this shuffler is crap.

For the past 4 rounds (I skipped a week), we were pressured in many ways. Many people questioned about the qualification of the judges. Initially we kept our identity secret because we didn’t want people to question our judgement.

We were branded blind, fools and cowards when some good contestants didn’t make it to the finals. One even threatened to throw eggs at us. Dumb arse.

Of course, what matters are the end results. It doesn’t matter who qualified to the Finals and who didn’t. But some people were not happy with the end results as well. I humbly believe that the winners deserve their prizes. One might think they don’t but again I stress that the results is a collective result and not by one man.

Anyway, it’s over. I do not wish to discuss about the results again. I’m glad this controversial competition is over. Damage has been done to the Shuffling community in Malaysia. Now it’s time to patch up and reconcile.

Congrats to the winners, hope they spend their money wisely. I would recommend sharing 50% of them with the judges. YEAH!!!

We judges did not receive a single cent for the competition. All we got was a small token

    and

A BOTTLE OF BLACK LABEL! W00T!!

Btw, thank you azmer for the free flow!

I thank Atmosphere club for organizing the event.

I have always dreamt of making Melbourne Shuffle big in Malaysia. Now it seems that it is more popular than it is before 6 years ago. Now, I can retire in peace…. Hehe

    Here are some videos.

Winner of the 1st Melbourne Shuffle Competition in Malaysia - azmer

2nd Runner Up of the Melbourne Shuffle Competition in Malaysia - Christina

Researching Melbourne for a vacation?  Its always a good idea to consider staying in time shares.  Relax and enjoy yourself in Australia or where ever you may choose to have a rci time share.  Make sure to read up on time share regulations in to educate yourself on the rules.   If you are looking for a change of scenery then you need timeshares for sale.  A good resource that explains how a time share works is something you need to look over.

BIG IT UP FOR THE ANONYMOUS SHUFFLER. I got this video from ivN @ trancemission.sstwo.net

You can download the video here.

The music sounds abit odd though. The first part sounds like an elephant calling for help. Then somehow it evolves to happy trumpeting by the elephant. But no doubt it's a nice song :D

That's right people, I am organizing a random shuffle event this weekend. It's not a party or rave, it is just me and some friends doing some shuffle in the middle of the city! I am sick of the Australian mentality to bully or alienate anyone who stands out. I will not tolerate anyone who wants to come along just to give crap to others for how they dance.

I have been inspired by the groups of break dancers who just setup and have a dance with mates for fun. I want to generate a positive culture and group of shufflers who are like minded and can share the same enthusiasm for the dance we love to do.

We gona take down some CDs, a speaker and an amp and just shuffle for the fun of it. We will also get some photos and lots of videos for you.

I only want to invite people who will actually shuffle and have no problem with performing in the middle of the city and have everyone look at them. I just want happy people who encourage each other and not give shit or be negative. It's just a bit of fun with friends who like to dance. Just like break dancers go and practice dance together for fun.

All are welcome, but only if you will wear your phat pants and have fun!

PM me for the time and location.

Anyway, I'm selling off some of my Great Britain Machin stamps here @ ebay. If you're interested please bid!

    September 16, 2004

    xes

My 2nd attempt on publishing a Melbourne Shuffle Basics video. This time with 2 views, front view and side view!

    You can download it from
    http://www.gavintan.com/videos/melbshufflebasic2.wmv

Thank you Gavin for hosting the videos. Please feel free to rape Gavin's bandwith.

The quality isnt that good. I think the quality deteriorated after I convert it from MOV to mpg1. And dont ask me why I'm wearing short pants. And noooooo I didnt notice that I lifted my feet too high. iv'N said it looked like a male dog trying to piss.

Some ego-boasting comments please? :D heheh

Latest video from Hayden, the travelling Shuffler. Now @ Singapore!

    Melbourne Shuffle @ Merlion, Singapore.

    AND!!

Salem Revelation @ First World Hotel Carpark, Genting - Sat 31 July

    8pm. RM35 inc. 2 drinks. (!!!)

Split into two stages, the Revive and Rediscover Zones, keep things far from monotonous. At the Revive Zone, Ben Katana, Bryan Burger and Goldfish complete a triumvate arsenal of twisted techno, electro, hip hop, funk and trash.

Si Begg calls nu school breaks in session, while Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson ring out the Detroit techno sound. Johan Gielen uncaps the glowsticks and turns on the trance in the am. At the Rediscover Zone, Fono and Blink trade dark proggy house and dirty progressive breaks.

FC Kahuna follows with acid house and silicon soul. Then its tribal stalwarts Peace Division taking up the rear leaving Gabriel and percussionist Steve Thornton to take you on builds, twists and long dancefloor moments. One to remember on the long ride home.

For info, call the Salem Revelation hotline at 7665 2260/1 or 017-6900 281 (KL), or 017-6900 294 (JB/Kuantan/Melaka/Ipoh/Penang).

Oh yeah, the winners of The Melbourne Shuffle competition @ Hard Kandy will be performing there as well! :D

    Melbourne Shuffle @ Mount Fuji!!

Maybe we should do something like this. Probably shuffle in front of KL Twin Tower or some other weird places like a mosque or pasar malam.

    Melbourne Shuffle

    June 11, 2004

    xes

    Got this from Cris

SHUFFLE COMPETITION @ Hard Kandy, Melbourne

Hard Kandy in conjunction with one of the largest rave crews in Kuala Lumpur (KL), are giving 6 lucky shufflers the chance to shuffle in KL through an all expenses paid trip. This came about because the crew in KL have heard so much about the "Melbourne Shuffle" and would like 6 of our dancers to perform as part of their stage production at one of thier events.

The prize: A return airfare to KL, 2 nights accommodation plus $250 spending money. Winners will also have the opportunity to appear in the Hard Kandy DVD later this year.

The travel dates:You will fly out on the 30th July (Friday) and return to Melbourne on the 1st August (Sunday). You must be available for these 3 full days.

The conditions: To enter, the following Terms and Conditions apply:
      1) Dancers must be over 18 years of age.
      2) Dancers must have a valid passport and be eligible and willing to travel (eligability will be checked through an interview process)
      3) Dancers must not have any prior criminal convictions in order to be eligable to travel
      4) Dancers must be available on 31st Jul to 1st August
      5) Dancers must be physically capable to perform for multiple 30min sets over a 6 hour period.
      6) Dancers will be representing HARD KANDY. Their conduct must be professional at all times.
      7) Illicit substances are not tolerated in KL. HARD KANDY will not take any responsibility for any persons found or associated with drugs during the competition.
      8) HARD KANDY reserves the right to cancel the competition without notice.
      9) HARD KANDY reserves the right to reverse the final decision at any time.

The process: We have already been collecting names over the past few weeks of different shufflers. These people, as well as anyone who comes down to the re-opening on the 11th June and shuffles, will have the opportunity to be selected into the final 20.

The final 20 will be selected on the 11th June at the re-opening of Kandy. After we have selected these final 20 shufflers, we will be recording each person individually outside of the club. The judges will then sit down and watch the footage of each shuffler before selecting the final 6.

Those final 6 will need to go through an interview process with myself so that we can double check their eligability of travel. This will include checking passports and various other aspects which are neccessary to be able to gain a work permit in KL for this competition.

The remaining 14 shufflers will be held as "reserves", pending the outcome that one of the final 6 is not eligable to travel.

ARGGHHH GOD DAMN IT. I WANT A GMAIL ACCOUNT!! DESPRATELY!!
I have a blogger account but I can't register a gmail account there!! How do I fucking register a fucking gmail account??
My bloody 10MB hotmail account will be terminated next month. I can't renew it cause they don't fucking accept Malaysia Credit Card. ARGHHH HOOWW??

    Frank's birthday
Frank’s birthday was great. Frederick and HC bought him 2 tall glasses of Graveyard (power shit). He finished it in no time. Initially he was fine, talking normally. Then few minutes later, he spoke loudly and made some funny comments. No doubt he was fucked!! No one can withhold the power of Graveyard!!

Unfortunately, we had no eggs throwing ceremony this year. Initially we wanted to hire an escort girl for him. Too bad it didn’t work out. Imagine we got him a super duper voluptuous lady to spend the night with him..Ahh..and the next best thing would be…finding out that the voluptuous girl he slept with was a transsexual.

Anyway, more mails enquiring about Melbourne Shuffle!

      mark

    This one is really interesting

      Dude,

*you don't know me but please read before you delete*

I often go to big houseparties in Holland and Germany for quite a couple of
      years now.

In Germany I found that people were dancing very differently from what we are
      used to in Holland.

So I started looking on forums to find anything about this new way of dancing. (
this was about a year ago )

Eventually, I ended up at inthemix.com and ofcourse your site. I was amazed by
the fact that this dance originated from Melbourne, since I first saw it in
Germany. ( is this true, or is it just Melbourne that claimes the dance, no
      offence! )

Anyway I really enjoyed watching the video's and I actually start to get the
      shuffle going.

The reason why I am mailing you right now is because I read your page gets quite
      some hits.

I found two German websites on the melbourne shuffle ( although it is never
mentioned by that name ). Here are the links:

      http://www.hardstep.de/
      http://www.techno-schritte.de.vu/

The first one requires you the create an account in order to download the
video's. But there are quite a lot of them and people continue to upoad stuff.
They film thereselfs in their rooms, at clubs, housparties, shoppingmalls,
train... you name it. Some are good, others are really bad. You won't believe it
but even your video is on their website :) your famous man!

I thought you might wanted to put these links on your website so that more
people can find out about the Melbourne shuffle.

I would really appreciate it if you would email me if you find anything new on
      the shuffle.

Let's get the whole world shuffling!

      Regards,

      Kris from The Netherlands

NOTE: THE REFERRED DOCUMENTARY HAS NO RELATION TO MELBOURNE SHUFFLER DOCUMENTARY DVD.

Melbourne Shuffle Documentary, new from inthemix.au

    Get it @ http://www.inthemix.com.au/tv/clips/20040130_shuffle/index.php

Personally, i think this video is not up to the standard. It doesn't contain many visuals on shuffling. It is more of a documentary of Melbourne's rave scene. However, I highly appreciate the author of this video for her hard work and commitment to popularize Melbourne Shuffle. Unfortunately, the contents of video isn't up to the standard.

I have the video file with me but I will not upload it on my server (it's 18mb in size unless trance-tech wants to host it :D ). If you want it, message me..
